Real Madrid have announced that they have reached an agreement with Porto for defender Eder Militao. The 21-year-old centre-back has caught Madrid’s attention with a string of accomplished performances for Porto since his €4m (£3.5m) move from Sao Paulo last summer. Manchester United were also interested in signing Militao but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to look elsewhere for a central defender after Madrid agreed a €50million (£42.6m) deal for the Brazilian.

The youngster, who will join up with his new team-mates at the end of the season, has signed a six-year contract with Madrid which ties him to the club until the summer of 2025.

‘Real Madrid CF and FC Porto have agreed the transfer of the player Eder Militao,’ an official statement on Madrid’s website said. ‘He will be linked to the club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2025.’

Militao becomes the opening signing of Zinedine Zidane’s new reign after the Frenchman returned to replace Santiago Solari as manager earlier this week. Zidane wanted assurances from club president Florentino Perez that he would receive the necessary funding to overhaul Madrid’s squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
