James Rodriguez will not be returning to Real Madrid now that Zinedine Zidane is in charge at the club, according to reports. The playmaker is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, but was linked with a shock transfer move to Arsenal in January. Rodriguez has struggled with injuries and consistency at Bayern and was shipped out to Germany by Zidane in the Frenchman’s first spell.

Sport claim Zidane’s appointment ends any hope Rodriguez had of a second chance at Madrid. However, the development could be good news for Arsenal who are reportedly interested in signing the Colombian. Bayern are not keen on signing Rodriguez on a permanent deal, meaning Rodriguez may have to hunt for an entirely new club in the summer.

Rodriguez was part of the Bayern side that was overpowered by Liverpool at home in the Champions League, playing 79 minutes in the 3-1 defeat. The 27-year-old has moved in and out of Bayern’s side, but has scored four times and provided six assist in 22 appearances. Unai Emery will not have a big transfer budget to play with in the summer, with some reports claiming to could be as little as £40million. Real paid £71m for Rodriguez in 2014 and would want a significant fee for a player who does not turn 28 until July.
