Jose Mourinho told Real Madrid he wanted the club to sign Virgil van Dijk, David De Gea and Harry Kane if he returned to the Santiago Bernabeu as manager, according to reports in Spain. On Monday, Madrid announced that Zinedine Zidane has been re-appointed as manager but the Spanish club’s president Florentino Perez had given serious consideration to Mourinho being granted a second stint in charge.

However, several members of Madrid’s hierarchy were against Mourinho’s arrival, while reports claim that both Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema were not in favour of the Portuguese being brought back to the Bernabeu. According to El Chiringuito, Mourinho made it clear that he would only return if he was given full control of the team and would be allowed to overhaul the squad during the summer transfer window.

And Mourinho had proposed a four-man shortlist to Madrid’s board which included Van Dijk, De Gea, Kane and his Tottenham teammate Christian Eriksen.

De Gea is yet to sign a new contract with Manchester United and Mourinho reportedly wanted his former No.1 at Old Trafford to replace Thibaut Courtois, who has struggled to impress since arrival at Madrid last summer.

Kane and Eriksen were already on Madrid’s radar before the club spoke with Mourinho and the 56-year-old agreed to support moves for both players. Van Dijk, meanwhile, was Mourinho’s top target to improve Madrid’s options in central defence but the Spanish club have already made significant progress in their bid to sign Porto centre-back Eder Militao.

Meanwhile, former Madrid president Ramon Calderon admits the opposition from the club’s senior players was crucial in the decision to re-appoint Zidane.

‘The opinion of the dressing room leaders has prevailed over that of the president, after the quarrel between Sergio Ramos and the president,’

Calderon told Love Sport Radio. ‘This president thought Mourinho was the right one and he was his first option because he is one of those presidents that thinks a firm hand is important in the dressing room.

‘But the players, and Sergio Ramos, told him and they did it publicly as well, that you have to take into account which managers have won the Premier League with Real Madrid: Del Bosque, Ancelotti and Zidane. It’s nothing to do with the style of play of Mourinho.

‘His first idea was to come in June but finally he’s accepted to come now for the rest of the season and for three more years. Finally we can get on the path of victory again.’
