Maurizio Sarri has told Eden Hazard he can leave Chelsea but the Italian manager hopes he remains at Stamford Bridge. Hazard has developed into one of the best players in the world at Chelsea since signing from Lille seven years ago.

He scored his 100th goal for the Blues last month and has made over 300 appearances. Despite flourishing in west London, Hazard has repeatedly flirted with the idea of joining Real Madrid, a club he has wanted to play for since he was a child.

Real are said to be hoping to sign the Belgian in the summer, while Chelsea continue to pursue a new contract for their talisman.

Ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Bournemouth on Wednesday evening, Sarri said: ‘Eden is 28. If he wants to go, I think he has to go. ‘Of course, I hope the opposite, I hope he wants to stay here. He has the potential to be the best player in Europe at the moment.’

Hazard, often playing as a false nine, has been one of the stars of the Premier League this season with ten goals and ten assists. However, he appears set to return to the wing following the arrival of Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Asked about Hazard’s role in the team now Higuain has arrived, Sarri said: ‘It’s my job to improve him and put him in a position to do his best.’ More to follow…
