Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Alvaro Morata from Chelsea in a deal that will see him join on loan for the next 18 months. The 26-year-old, who has had two separate spells with Atletico’s city rivals Real Madrid, joined Chelsea in a club-record £57million move in 2017, but has struggled to live up to expectations.

Morata has managed just 16 goals in 47 Premier League appearances and has started just two of Chelsea’s last ten Premier League games, with Maurizio Sarri preferring Eden Hazard.

The striker was able to travel to Spain to undergo a medical after Chelsea sealed the signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Juventus. Higuain arrived after Sarri told the Chelsea board Morata was surplus to requirements and he wanted to bring his former forward to Stamford Bridge.

Diego Simeone will be hoping that Morata can rediscover his golden touch in Madrid as Antoine Griezmann aside, Atletico have lacked consistent goalscorers this season.

On his move to the Spanish capital, Morata said: ‘I’m very happy and proud to be here. I can’t wait to start training, meet my new teammates and play. Griezmann has a respectable nine La Liga goals to his name, but beyond the World Cup winner eight players in Atletico’s squad are tied on two goals.

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has endured a particularly disappointing season to date with just one goal to show from 11 La Liga matches. Despite scoring 26 goals fewer than Barcelona this season, Atletico are only five points behind them in the La Liga table in second place.
