Jose Mourinho has informed Manchester United chief Ed Woodward of his two priority signings for the remainder of the summer transfer window, according to The Times.
United finished second in the Premier League last season while reaching the FA Cup final, but Mourinho knows his squad is far from complete.
The Red Devils secured a deal for Fred, the Brazil international, earlier in the month and also signed Portugal U21 star Diogo Dalot from Porto.
But Mourinho is still hoping for United to clinch a few more signings and has told Woodward, the club’s vice-chairman, that he wants to see a new centre back and left back arriving through the doors.
Tottenham’s Belgian star Toby Alderweireld emerged as a top target for United earlier in the summer but any deal involving the player will not be finalised until after he returns from the World Cup. Mourinho has Ashley Young and Luke Shaw to work with at left back but is concerned that Young, who turns 33 next month, may not be as effective next season as he was during the 2017-18 campaign.
He has shown little faith in Shaw, meanwhile, and is ready to sell the 22-year-old if the right opportunity presents itself. Alex Sandro, the Juventus full-back, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United but is not believed to be pushing for a summer move.
The Times also say Mourinho remains interested in signing Gareth Bale from Real Madrid but understands a deal would be difficult to complete. Bale scored a stunning goal in last month’s Champions League final victory and his agent has admitted he could leave the Spanish capital this summer.
‘I think we have to have a chat with Real Madrid and see where we’re going,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘He wants a better year than he had last year.
He wants to play more, and that’s paramount to him. I think he’s one of the top three or four players on earth. ‘For somebody like him, he has to play. It’s not about money. He wants to win the Ballon d’Or and I think he can.’
